ARTSPACE 1 – HOUR RESIDENCIES – BOOKING NOW FOR NOVEMBER 23rd

What are the 1-Hour Residencies?
The Coventry Artspace (www.coventry-artspace.co.uk) 1-Hour Residencies were created when some of the members were inspired by two nuns who have been offering "online retreats" to help pay the bills at their Benedictine monastery in Oxfordshire. After thinking about what an online retreat could be, we decided that meeting up is often much more preferable – and were inspired to create the 1-Hour Residencies.

Why would I like to come?
Through the Artspace 1-Hour Residencies, we aim to provide up to 10 artists and creative practitioners with a short period of time and space away from their usual studio/work environment. They can be for reflective discussion, research, presentation and/or production, the idea is that people attending guide each other throughout the process, providing mutual support and with time to speak, listen and sometimes create. As a general starting point, we’ve provided simple themes which are designed to spark ideas and the group are encouraged to think of starting points for future discussion or exploration at each event.

Where are the 1-Hour Residencies?
The 1-Hour Residencies are designed to take place in pubs of interest (historical, atmospherical or otherwise) – so that artists can continue to socialise after the residency is complete. The next residency dates and location is as follows:

Wednesday 23rd November - 5:30pm-6:30pm
Theme: Light, candlelight, enlightening, illuminations.
Based on suggestions from the last event, The group will be working with a large scale map of Coventry to highlight places of influence or significance, stories, tales, words and inspiration in relation to practise.

Location: The Windmill, Spon Street, Coventry
(Usually followed by informal drinks in the same area)

Who are the 1-Hour Residencies for?

Artists and creative people working in any and across art forms that are looking for a short break and to share practise based discussions with other artists. They are also for academics, emergent practitioners, curators, and all kinds of creative people.

How do I come to a 1-Hour Residency?
Places are limited to 10 to ensure that the residencies are as inclusive and involved as possible. Separate bookings will be required for each event.  To book your place email:
mail@coventry-artspace.co.uk

SEPTEMBER

ARTSPACE OPEN FOR HERITAGE OPEN DAYS 2011 - Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th September - 11am-3pm Coventry Artspace, 16 Lower Holyhead Road, Coventry, CV1 3AU

Join Artspace studio holders and members for guided tours of building, every hour on the hour from 11am - 2pm (closing at 3pm) as part of Heritage Open Days, Coventry on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th September. Discover more about our historical location, including our well-known association with the 2-Tone scene.

Members of the Specials, the Selecter and other significant 2-Tone and Champion Sound musicians met and rehearsed from the Artspace basement
in the 1970’s and 1980’s when it was known as the Holyhead Music Workshop. The basement, now derelict, is frozen in time - featuring original graffiti from that famous period.

The space was recently used for filming a new Lord Melvyn Bragg documentary - due to be screened in November. Visitors will be able to listen to a special BBC Coventry & Warwickshire radio feature covering the visit from Bragg and his interviewee, Special's member Lynval Golding.

Information will be available about forthcoming Artspace events and plans.
